Designation of Kahane Chai - Research Paper Example As the result of the growing conflict in the Middle East, in the year 1947 following the War, the United Nations proposed a partition plan for British ruled Palestine. According to this plan, Palestine would have an Independent Jewish State and an Independent Arab State within recommended boundaries and a call for an economic union. The city of Jerusalem was however given a special shared status, proposed by the United Nations to accommodate the religious interests of both Arabs and Jews in the city. The treaty was signed in November 29th, 1947 and called for the withdrawal of the United Kingdom before 1st April 1948 from Palestine. This treaty was however met with mixed reactions by the respective Jewish and Arab nationalists. The Jewish community in Palestine accepted this proposal by the United Nations while the Arab committee and the Arab League rejected this proposal. This resulted in a civil war within the transitional period established by the United Nations and the partition plan was never carried out. Israel, however, proceeded to declare itself an independent state away from the British mandate of Palestine as awarded by Syria after World War I. This move by Israel led to aggression by neighboring Arab States.
